What muscles do we exercise when riding a bicycle

When riding a bicycle, we exercise a series of muscles that are located in the lower extremities, such as the quadriceps, the glutes, the calves, among others. Riding a bicycle is one of the activities that will help you stay in shape, and here we will talk about which are the main muscles that are exercised with it.

Strengthens the quadriceps

The quadriceps they are actually made up of a series of 4 muscles that are located at the top and front of your legs. These muscles are: the rectus femoris, the vastus medialis, the vastus lateralis, and the vastus intermedius.

These muscles connect to the knee and part of the hips. Therefore, they help to support and stabilize the body. When you pedal, they are the first to kick in when you push the pedal down.

Being the movement that requires the greatest strength, the quadriceps are the muscles that are most exercised. It is recommended, to strengthen them, pedaling in steep areas. Of course, you should do it gradually so as not to cause injury and other damage.

Hamstrings: quadriceps complement

These muscles, according to the portal Nexofin, complement the work of the quadriceps, and are important for stability. Its function is to connect the pelvis and the back of the femur, and it extends to the back of the knees.

Although these muscles are not defined as the quadriceps, their importance is that it helps the legs become more flexible, therefore, they are important so that they are extended during the pedaling process.

In this sense, the hamstrings function as support while the leg is in a resting state after having used the quadriceps in the pedaling process.

These muscles are located in the back of the lower leg, they perform practically the same function. They connect directly to the foot. In this sense, they are the ones that give the feet the strength to pedal.

These muscles work in conjunction with the quadriceps. Therefore, the effort that some make support or complement each other. Thus, depending on the pedaling rhythm, the different muscles will work together, distributing the load.
