Schools investigating reports of racial slur used during basketball game

Two Iowa high schools are investigating after a basketball player allegedly used a racial slur during a game.The alleged racial slur occurred Friday during a game between Southeast Valley and Graettinger-Terril.Footage from the game shows Southeast Valley player Tre Fisher’s frustration after a player from Graettinger-Terril reportedly called him a racial slur. Fisher’s mother, Heather Fisher, posted an emotional video to Facebook Sunday describing what happened.”My son sat crying on the sidelines of his basketball game last night because he was humiliated,” Fisher said. “Watching my son on the basketball court last night being referenced as a dumb (expletive) was very hard to watch.” The student-athlete who said the slur was not allowed back in the game. Graettinger-Terril School District’s Superintendent Marshall Lewis sent a statement to KCCI that said, in part, “This is a topic that is very serious, and we are addressing it as such. Our school and community neither condone nor tolerate acts of discrimination of any kind.”Southeast Valley’s superintendent added to the statement, saying, “We are heartbroken for our kids, their families, and the communities. We believe in our kids and we stand with them.”The Iowa High School Athletic Association said it is aware of the situation and working with the schools involved.
