An outbreak of salmonella has spread through 29 states of the country, the origin of which has not been discovered, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Until now, Texas is the state most affected by the disease.

More than a dozen hospitalized and approximately 280 people were found infected by the bacteria, according to the last CDC report dating from September 23rd.

Texas is the most affected state, with 81 cases, then Illinois and Virginia with 23 and 22 infected respectively. Minnesota and Massachusetts close the top five with 19 and 10 people with the active bacteria.

The CDC added that it is quite likely that there are more cases than recorded, Well, there are people who heal at home without getting tested for salmonella.

Regarding the origin of the outbreak, the health agency affirmed that they investigated the restaurants where several sick people ate, but they have not identified what the infected food is.

However, they found the bacteria in a jar containing coriander and lime, but before it contained onions, making it difficult to find the exact origin of salmonella.

“Because there were several foods in the container and in the sample that was tested, it is not possible to know which food was contaminated“, Detailed the CDC.

Salmonella is a bacterium that annually causes more than a million infections in the United States alone. Of that amount, causes 420 deaths each year nationwide.

Although the most common symptoms of salmonella infection are diarrhea, fever, and stomach pains that last about 7 days, the CDC notes that there are cases much more serious than lead a patient to be hospitalized.
