An investigation carried out by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC, for its acronym in English) found that currently there is an outbreak of salmonella in 25 states of the country.
According to the report issued by the CDC, at least 127 people have contracted salmonella and of these, 18 have had to be hospitalized when developing an acute infection. The age range of the patients extends from 1 to 82 years and 59% are women.
The document states that at least one case has been reported in the following states: California, Utah, New Mexico, North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska, Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, Minnesota, Iowa, Missouri, Arkansas, Wisconsin, Illinois, Michigan, South Carolina, North Carolina, Virginia, Maryland, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, New York, Connecticut and Massachusetts.
The 2 largest outbreaks appear to have occurred in Texas and Minnesota, where 45 people and 13 people have fallen ill, respectively.
However, the CDC has indicated that the figure is very likely to be higher, as many people manage to recover without needing medical attention and are also not tested for the presence of salmonella. Also, it usually takes 3 to 4 weeks to determine if a person is part of a particular outbreak.
It is also unknown until now what has caused it although they have been able to discover that it is a strain of the bacteria called Salmonella Oranienburg.
Remember that salmonella is a bacterium that can be found in a wide variety of foods, whether of animal or plant origin. In recent weeks, outbreaks of this disease related to the consumption of chicken, turkey, beef, mushrooms and peaches had been detected.
